5.4 million children across the world are currently trapped in orphanages – even though 80% of them have family they could live with if they had the right support. Orphanages harm children, depriving them of love and exposing them to abuse. Your support helps us get children to back to family.

Story

So for some crazy reason, I, who spent my entire childhood complaining about go on walks for the sake of walking, have signed up to spend a week trekking across Romania – a large part of this will include climbing mountains. But this time is very different as I am doing it to raise money for the amazing charity that is Hope and Homes for Children. Hope and Homes for Children work together with children, their families, communities, professionals, NGOs and governments across Central and Eastern Europe and Africa to ensure that institutionalisation is a thing of the past so that no child has to grow up deprived of the love and care of a family.

At the Wiltshire Life Awards in January I met the CEO of Hope and Homes for Children when he collected a lifetime achievement award on behalf of Mark and Caroline Cook, the founders of Hope and Homes for Children. Like all who were at the evening I was really moved when I heard about the amazing work Hope and Home for Children has done over the past 20 years. In Romania they have been working with the government to reduce the number of children living in institutions from 100,000 to 10,000. These were children hidden away in institutions that barely met their basic needs. Their aim is that in five years time not one child in Romania will suffer institutional care.

So from 13-19 September I will be trekking across Romania to raise money for Hope and Homes for Children. Before returning to the UK I will visit some of the children who have been helped by the money raised.

Please please donate what you can. Every child deserves the chance to grow up with the love and protection of a family.
