Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

On the 6th of May 2002 at the age of just 12 years of age  I was taken ill suddenly and without warning with sudden heart failure, caused by a condition called Dilated Cardiomyopathy. In order to save my life I was rushed to Great Ormond Street Hospital by a police escorted ambulance and placed on a life support machine to keep me alive. The doctors hoped that my heart would recover but it was too damaged and I was placed at the top of the UK European transplant list and was fortunate enough to receive a heart transplant which saved my life.  My recovery was slow and harrowing and I was finally discharged two months later in a wheelchair. Through this wonderful gift I have been able to return to a normal life and I am forever grateful to my donor and their family.

I first competed in the British Transplant Games one year after my transplant winning my first gold medal  and have attended the games every year since. I was fortunate to be selected to represent Great Britain  in 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013.

In  2011 I sadly developed post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) resulting in non-hodgkins lymphoma which I underwent 5 sessions of chemotherapy (I am now in remission)

I have been selected to represent Great Britian for the World Transplant games in Argentina in both sprinting and volleyball  due to my performances at the British Transplant Games and I am now currently in training for these events.

For over 35 years the World Transplant Games Federation has been staging international sporting events for transplant athletes in order to demonstrate the physical success of transplant surgery and to raise awareness of the need to increase organ donation. The World Transplant Games takes place every two years where over 1500 athletes representing some 69 countries at an extraordinarily high level.

Unfortunately every athlete has to fund their own travel and registration costs for the games, and therefore I am asking if you could spare a small amount to help with the costs for me.

Please help support me by giving what you can :)

The funds raised will be used towards my flight, accommodation, food, Team GB kit/clothing, cost of training/membership, travel to Team Meetings and any surplus will go to TSUK medical/physio costs. This will also keep up with my campaigning to spread awareness of Organ Donation on a global scale.

The World Transplant Games is a celebration of life, but it is important to understand that it helps raise international awareness of organ donation. The Games are intended to encourage people to sign up to the Organ Donor Register and discuss their wishes with their families. In the UK there are currently more than 7,500 people in need of a transplant, but only 28 per cent of the public are signed up to the Register. So if you wish to register onto the NHS ODR call 0300 123 23 23, text SAVE to 84118 or by log onto www.organdonation.nhs.uk
