We increase the pool of stem cell donors to give patients a second chance of life

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

On 23/24 May I will be taking part in Action Challenge's London to Brighton 100km ultra marathon alongside a team of friends called Surrey Hills Sisters with Blisters. It will take us c.24-28 hours of continuous walking through day & night.

We are each fundraising for different charities, and for me it is Delete Blood Cancer UK, a charity which aims to increase the register of blood stem cell donors such that anyone suffering with blood cancer can find a suitable stem cell donor.

My inspiration? Last year I followed the story of a little girl called Margot Martini. Margot was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of blood cancer in October 2013 aged just 14 months old. Margot's family were told that she needed a stem cell transplant and to search the stem cell register for a suitable match.

Team Margot (Margot's family and friends) was formed and started a worldwide appeal to raise awareness to find a matching blood stem cell donor for Margot. Watch link http://youtu.be/9hpMvGnVxAg. A donor was found but sadly Margot's blood cancer returned post transplant and she passed away in October 2014, aged 2. Team Margot continues to work tirelessly to encourage people to register as a potential stem cell donor...and I want to help them.

Every 20 minutes, someone in the UK is diagnosed with a blood cancer like leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma (that's 70 people a day, 25,000 a year). There is hope as blood stem cells from a matching donor can save their lives, you can be the cure and you can save a life.

Every single registration counts. It’s a numbers game; the more people that join the register & the greater and more diverse the pool of potential donors, the more lives will be saved.

Once on the register you have a 1 in 1,200 chance that you will be asked to actually donate your stem cells, at which time you could save a life. Donating isn’t difficult, your stem cells quickly replenish and the effects of your donation can last a lifetime.

Margot’s family remain unspeakably grateful to her anonymous donor for his miraculous gift, which enabled Margot to have more time at home with her family and loved ones.

Thank you for your fundraising support. Please also register as a potential stem cell donor – it is easy to register. You can find out more on Team Margot and how to register at http://www.teammargot.com/how-to-register/

Thank you! Emma
