Story

On 01/09/2014 Velo7 set a World Record for the 'Race Across Europe by Bike - Russia to Portugal'. James cycled 3,912 miles in 37 days, breaking Guinness' target of 45. With the support of his team, James spent a total of 212 hours in the saddle, averaging 18.5 mph. The teams' motive for this ordeal - Cyclists Fighting Cancer.

James commented on completing the world record:

"Although the record was for an individual cyclist, our success should be put down to a huge team effort. The team were pivotal in overcoming serious injuries, mechanical breakdowns and ensuring we remained focussed for 37 days.

Our team extends to our friends, family, followers on the Velo7 Facebook page and our sponsors, all of whom provided significant support. It felt like we had a massive family spurring us on until the very end.

Something that stuck with me throughout the final stages of the race was a comment from another CFC fundraiser and supporter of our efforts. Even when I was only able to pedal with one leg, it cemented my belief that we couldn't fail..

'...I'm humbled by your achievement and I hope our donation has helped to spur you on to the end.....the lads do a fair bit for CFC, it's our favourite charity and we are all just blown away by your stamina, commitment and the pain you must be going through .....go finish young man and make us proud.'

This exemplifies the incredible support we received perfectly."

CFC enables children and young people living with cancer across the UK to regain their physical fitness, strength and confidence by giving them new bikes, adapted trikes, tandems, other equipment and support. Exercise has been shown in numerous studies to be the single most effective way of improving both physical and mental wellness for people surviving cancer.  Cycling is a favoured form of exercise based rehabilitation especially for children because it provides all these benefits in a low impact, fun, sociable and exciting way. Cancer causes massive disruption in families, therefore CFC also give bikes to their siblings and in many cases their parents in order that they can take part in an activity as a family once again after what can be years of hospitalisation and upheaval.

Velo7's Mission was to set a new Guinness World Record for the Race Across Europe in order to inspire others to embark upon life-enhancing projects. Our rationale for this mission was that initiatives and projects such as these represent significant life experiences and exemplify what can be achieved if we live in a healthy and inspired way.

"Our point of view is that to get the most out of life, we need to constantly push ourselves to do more. Our physical and mental health does more than just keep us alive, it keeps us active, energetic and in love with life. This is pivotal in helping us to achieve our goals.
