HIPZ bike ride Zanzibar · 6 June 2013

HIPZ is a small charity with big plans to improve healthcare for everyone in Zanzibar. Our programmes improve hospitals and health services that are used by 1.8 million people. From maternal and child health to emergency medicine and mental health, we deliver long-lasting, locally led change.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. HIPZ (Health Improvement Project Zanzibar) is a charity founded by my work colleague, Ru MacDonagh, in partnership with the Government of Zanzibar. Its goal is to improve the health of local people and to develop robust healthcare services through fundraising and providing professional support. Since 2006, the charity has transformed acute services at Makunduchi Hospital; you can read more about this at http://www.hipz.org.uk/files/Bike-Ride-Brochure.pdf.

The funds raised from this bike ride will contribute directly to the transformation of services at the larger hospital at Kivunge. Average life expectancy in Zanzibar is 47 years, while 1 in 6 children die before they reach their 7th birthday. To date, HIPZ has funded the full rennovation of Makunduchi hospital and the training of healthcare professionals. It has funded the development of a new obstetric service that includes transport to hospital for women in labour; staff have also been trained to perform Caesarian sections. This has led to a major decline in mother and baby deaths in Zanzibar.
