We fund research into SMA to help find a cure and treatments

Story

On 28th June I will be walking 50 miles from Painswick to Chipping Campden to raise awareness and funds for the SMA Trust.

I would like to raise at least £10 for every mile that I walk so please give what you can.

What is The SMA Trust?

The SMA Trust is the only charity in the UK dedicated to raising funds for research into Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).

SMA is the leading genetic killer of toddlers and babies. SMA affects the motor neurons in the spinal cord, causing muscular weakness, severe disability and premature death. 50% of the most severely diagnosed cases result in death by the age of two. 1 in every 40 people carries the gene that causes this disease (around 1.5million people in the UK).

What is the MAD Challenge?

The MAD challenge (Momentum ADventure World Challenge) is a worldwide challenge set by Children with SMA who have already done their own Mad Challenges and raised £1million in 2011. They have now thrown down the gauntlet to others asking them to carry out challenges, physical or not, preferably mad, and inspire others to do the same to raise sponsorship and donations for The SMA Trust.

“I know there is presently no cure or treatment for SMA. Many babies with a certain type of this disease will not live to see their second birthday. Research is the only hope for these families.”

Keira Knightley, Patron of the SMA Trust
