Story

A few weeks ago we heard that dozens of pro-Palestinian activists were planning to climb Mount Snowdon (the tallest mountain in England and Wales) to plant the Palestinian flag at its peak as a fundraiser for Interpal (a charity the USA has banned for funding or supporting terrorism). With no training at all, we decided to climb the mountain in order to meet them at the top and fly the flag of Israel.

We had no idea what to expect, all we knew was that attending anti-Israel demonstrations and climbing mountains are dangerous in isolation - but combined this seemed like a suicide mission.

We had to travel 13 hours and stay in Manchester for Shabbat, as no one from our team lived near Snowdon. After effectively two days of travelling we finally arrived at our destination and after a ferocious three hour climb we reached the peak which was awash with dozens of Palestinian flags.

Adorned in Israeli flags and dwarfed in numbers we decided the best way to ensure nothing violent happened (the nearest police station was a long helicopter flight away) was to approach their camp and offer them baklava. Providing us with the opportunity to engage them and promote Israel.

When the leader of their group saw 4 pro-Israel activists approaching waving blue and white flags, he confidently looked each of us in the eye and said:

"Will you do us a favour..."

Expecting him to scream "take your flags and shove them where the sun doesn't shine", we asked "what?", to our amazement he replied "will you have your photo taken with us?"

What followed was a very surreal group photo, while bewildered British climbers tried to make sense of a mountain that now resembled an Israel/Palestine peace summit. We struck up numerous conversations in which almost all of their activists stated they supported Israel's right to exist.

Unfortunately while it seemed these young activists may have been sincere in recognising Israel's right to exist. Sadly the charity they were collecting for is more questionable. Interpal has been linked by many to Hamas and is banned in America. Even the t-shirts they'd given their climbers displayed a map of "Palestine" where Israel is today.

Because of this link, the money we're collecting for our climb will go to One Family. A charity which helps support the victims of terror attacks in Israel.

We couldn't raise money before the climb as it would have blown our mission. But this weekend we climbed a mountain for Israel, please don't let it be for nothing and donate generously to this very deserving charity.
