We fund research into type 1 diabetes to find a cure for type 1 diabetes

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am making 2014 the year I do something different, the year I do something to help towards finding a cure for a disease that has affected someone I love.

This year I am abseiling 100m down the ‘Spinnaker Tower’ in Portsmouth (eeeekkkk)

I am doing this to help raise awareness for ‘Autoimmune Type 1 Diabetes’ and raise funds to help find a cure for this disease.

I watch my daughter Holly cope with this every minute of every day, as a parent it is my job to ensure my children are safe, to make things better when they are hurt, scared and sad.. I would give her my pancreas in heartbeat if I could! but I can’t make this better for her, I can’t take it away, I can’t even tell her it will get better! What I can do though is give her a cuddle, tell her everyday how much I love her, how proud of her I am and I can help raise awareness and funding.

100 years ago, our precious daughter would not have survived beyond 12 months of developing Type 1! 100 years of research has brought so many breakthroughs that our daughter is still here with us today, imagine what research could do in another 10 or 20 years, with funding it could find a cure!

Living with Type 1 is a constant challenge. People with the disease must carefully balance insulin doses (either by injections multiple times a day or continuous infusion through a pump) with eating and other activities throughout the day and night. They must also measure their blood-glucose level by pricking their fingers for blood six or more times a day. Despite this constant attention, people with Type 1 still run the risk of dangerous high or low blood-glucose levels, both of which can be life threatening. People with Type 1 overcome these challenges on a daily basis.

Type 1 is very different to Type 2, it is not reversible, diet or changes in lifestyle will not make it go away. It is a lifelong, life threatening condition where the body does not make any of its own insulin, in Holly's case this is due to her body’s own immune system destroying the ‘islets’ on the pancreas that create insulin.

That’s why this year I have decided to face my greatest fear ‘heights' to help raise funds for the JDRF.. for anyone that knows me, they know I have a HUGE fear of heights, so abseiling down the Spinnaker has to be the craziest thing I have ever undertaken!!

Holly has been so brave this past 16months since being diagnosed, I want to be brave too and help towards finding a cure for her and all affected by type 1!

I would be deeply grateful for any sponsorship you can give, thank you for your love and support xx
