Story

Stornoway Rotary Club and The Nicolson Institute Interact Club are inviting people and businesses to get on their bikes to raise funds for Prostate Cancer.

Stornoway Rotary’s ‘Bike for Life’ will take place on Saturday, June 20th, in Perceval Square.

The Nicolson Institute Pipe Band and Marching Band are to open the event with a procession through town to the Square, where five static cycles, kindly donated by Ionad Spors Leodhas and Ionad Spors na Hearadh, will be situated.

There will also be displays of work undertaken by the Rotary Club of Stornoway and The Nicolson Institute Interact Club; as well as teas, coffees and home baking, with music from Nicolson pupils.

Stornoway Rotary Club’s Bike for Life forms part of a national Rotary drive to raise awareness and funds for Prostate Scotland.

All across the UK, Rotarians, individuals and businesses will take to their bikes on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 21st.

Rotary’s District Governor for Northern Scotland, Keith Hopkins, said: Rotary in this District 1010 in Scotland has 88 clubs and nearly 3,000 members.

“Nationally we have 50,000 members in 1,800 clubs and hopefully each club will be involved to make history. But we also want as many members of the public as possible to boost that number.”

He continued: “Why not see how many miles a person can cycle in one hour; how many miles can you do as an individual and company employees travel in one hour on one bike; taking it in turns and maximise the miles you travel over that period, or shorter, or longer.

“This could even be part of a wider competition within businesses in Scotland. Why not challenge another business?”

To take part in the Stornoway Rotary ‘Bike for Life’ event, individuals and businesses can register on the day at Perceval Square. Registration is open from 10am.
